Is Reiki All in My Head?

You know, this question pops up a lot—both from curious friends and even in my own early days of practicing Reiki. I can’t tell you how many times I’ve heard, “But isn’t it just all in your head?” And honestly? I don’t take offense to it one bit.

Here’s the thing—yes, Reiki energy is very real, whether or not you can see it. During a session, both the practitioner and the receiver often feel something—sometimes it’s warmth, tingling, deep calm, or even a wave of emotion. But because most of us were raised to believe only in what we can see, touch, or measure, we tend to raise an eyebrow when something doesn’t fit neatly into that box. We doubt what we feel. We second-guess the subtle.

So when someone says, “Isn’t that just in your head?” my answer is… well, maybe it is—and that still makes it real. Everything begins in the mind. When you want something in life, doesn’t it start as a thought? A tiny spark of intention? That spark becomes a choice, and that choice becomes reality. The mind is incredibly powerful, and intention—when used on purpose—is even more so.

The difference with Reiki is that it’s a conscious, loving alignment with healing energy. It’s not something you just stumble into without thought; it’s an intentional act. It’s about tuning into a current of kindness and light so it can help bring your body, mind, and spirit into their most balanced, vibrant state. Reiki can relieve pain, ease depression, support the body’s natural healing response, and create a sense of peace that lingers long after a session ends.

Would it be wonderful if science could hand us an undeniable, physical “proof” of Reiki? Absolutely. But honestly, even if someone wants to call it a placebo, I’m fine with that. Why? Because the healing still happens. If a person walks away feeling lighter, calmer, and more whole, then the work has done its job. And in my book, that’s as real as it gets.
